Which wines to serve on Boxing Day...and the parties!

Boxing Day
(The day after the day of over-indulgence as I tend to call it!) - there will be lots of jaded palates around, so if you're having a boxing day party or get together, keep the wines lively and refreshing; zesty whites and gentle soft reds. Boxing days lunches often feature Gammon as the main dish, with salads to revive the taste buds, so look no further than a silky New Zealand Pinot Noir or the deliciously light and fruity red Henry Fesse Beaujolais Villages.

If it's a Turkey curry, or Coronation Turkey salad, then you should go with an exuberant, fruity white, such as Cono Sur Reserva Riesling, or be really bold and try the luscious lime scented Terrazas Torrontes from Argentina which will just tango beautifully with spicy Turkey!

Now for the Party Wine!

Keep things simple with fun, fruit-driven wines, which will work with or without food! Let's start with sparkling wines: if you’re catering for a crowd, choose great value, gentle, creamy fizzes, from Italy, Spain or Australia, with no harsh edges, such as Prosecco, Codorniu extra Brut, or why not go pink and serve Codorniu extra brut rose.

Onto white wines...now here you’re looking for fresh, zesty, lively fruity whites, with a bit of punch and character to revive palates already jaded by lots of Christmas parties! But given the weather, choose whites with a bit of presence, no time for light, wimpy summer whites right now! Avoid heavily oaked, very full bodied, high alcohol whites, and opt for zingy Sauvignons, creamy Chardonnays and ripe Viogniers (which are very party food friendly wines!); for reds, the same thing applies – you’re looking for juicy, fruity reds, which have lots of character, but won’t overpower your guests with alcohol or tannins, and are great with and without food – so spicy Rhone style wines, Pinot Noir, and rich, velvety New World reds, from Shiraz to fruity Merlots.

Happy New Year and I look forward to posting about how it all went...!
